There’s a quiet pain that many musicians carry. It’s not the result of long practice hours or performance anxiety. It’s something deeper—something unspoken. It’s the feeling of waking up one day and realizing that despite all your training, all your degrees, and all your dedication to your art… no one ever taught you how to make a living.

I remember that moment vividly.

I had completed my doctorate in music. I had traveled the world performing. I had dedicated my entire life to perfecting my craft. And yet, I found myself staring into a future where the most important piece of the puzzle—how to build a sustainable livelihood around my music—was missing.

The Weight of Resentment

That realization left me feeling resentful. Angry at a system that failed to prepare me for reality. Frustrated that I’d done everything “right,” only to find out that the rules I’d been following weren’t designed to lead to financial freedom. And, if I’m being honest, I carried some of that frustration inward too. I felt shame that I hadn’t asked more questions sooner, that I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

But here’s the truth that changed everything: Resentment may feel justified, but it doesn’t create momentum. Forgiveness does.

Forgiveness as a Business Strategy

I had to forgive the system that didn’t teach me entrepreneurship. I had to forgive the mentors who never talked about money. Most of all, I had to forgive myself—for waiting so long to shift. Only then was I able to take ownership of my next chapter.

That emotional release gave me the clarity to start building. My husband and I launched our first music academy while still finishing our degrees. I began studying business and entrepreneurship like my life depended on it—because it did. We stepped into a new identity not just as musicians, but as entrepreneurs. And from there, everything changed.

You Can’t Build a Future While Holding Onto the Past

What I want you to understand is that forgiveness isn’t about pretending the past didn’t hurt. It’s about deciding that your future matters more. It’s about choosing action over stagnation. And it’s about realizing that the life and business you want to create will only become possible when you stop dragging the weight of what “should have been.”

When musicians come to me feeling stuck, burned out, or unsure of their next steps, I often find it’s not a lack of talent or effort holding them back. It’s an emotional residue from an outdated model that no longer fits their goals. And until that’s released, strategy alone won’t stick.
