If you run your own business, you’ve probably received plenty of advice over the years. Mentors, coaches, peers, family, and friends–most people have something to say about how you should run your business and what you should do to be successful.

It’s been the same way for me…but I’ve learned that not all business advice is created equal. Most of it is well-intentioned, but not all of it can resonate with you and what you’re trying to do with your venture.

But here’s some advice that I’ve received that I’ve never forgotten:

When you think about your business and everything you’re building as something that transcends you, as an opportunity to leave a mark on this world, to leave a legacy, and change people’s lives–it transforms how you approach your business.

If you’re focusing on your business as a way to make money, gain fame, or establish your reputation–those are all pieces of the puzzle, and they may or may not happen over time. But they can’t be your main focus.

Your business is how people remember you. Not just because of the things you created, your wealth, or your success, but because of the impact you and your business made on other people.

It’s so easy to find yourself in a place of insecurity, fear, and impostor syndrome, where you wonder what people will think about what you do or if you’re on the right track.

You have to remember: this is not about you.

At the end of the day, your business is going to transcend you, both during and after your lifetime.

You have to think about what your ultimate goal is for your business. What is your end game? What do you want to be remembered for?

The answers to these questions are your guiding star. When you feel doubt, or like you don’t belong in the entrepreneurship world–remember why you’re doing what you’re doing. Focus on the real, tangible impact you are having on the people you serve.

Because they’ll remember you for it.
